Dr Hisham A. (H.A.) Hellyer FRHistS FRSA FRUSI is a British scholar with over two decades of experience in geopolitics, and Islamic thought, across the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

He currently serves as Senior Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies (RUSI) — the world’s oldest think-tank – and as Senior Fellow in Geopolitics and Security at the Center for American Progress. He also holds a professorial appointment at the Bayan Graduate School in Islamic Thought, Politics and International Affairs.

Dr Hellyer’s think-tank career has encompassed senior research posts at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Brookings Institution, Cambridge University, Harvard University, and the American University in Cairo. He has been elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of RUSI, and has appeared on the RISSC–Georgetown University “Muslim 500” list since 2017.

Dr Hellyer is the author or editor of ten books, and writes regularly for Foreign Affairs, the Financial Times, the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Guardian, Foreign Policy, and Politico, and is a frequent commentator for CNN, the BBC, and Al Jazeera. Raised between the Arab world and the West, he brings a perspective grounded in lived experience across the US, Europe, the Arab world, and Southeast Asia, over more than two decades.
