PROF. JOSEPH A. MASSAD

Joseph A. Massad is Professor of Modern Arab Politics and Intellectual History at Columbia University. He is the author of several books, dozens of scholarly articles, and hundreds of op-eds. His books include Colonial Effects: The Making of National Identity in Jordan (2001), Desiring Arabs (2007), and Islam in Liberalism (2014). His forthcoming book is tentatively titled From the America to Palestine: The Age of Independence and the Global History of Settler-Colonialism if forthcoming. He is а recipient of a number of research and teaching awards, including the Lionel Trilling Book Award for his book Desiring Arabs, The University of Pennsylvania’s Scott Nearing Award for Courageous Scholarship, and The Columbia University Faculty Mentoring Award. His works have been translated to more than a dozen languages including Arabic, Turkish, Chinese, Persian, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Japanese, German, and Indonesian. Professor Massad is also a regular columnist in English and Arabic at the London-based publications Middle East Eye and Arabi21.
